Sekisui House, Ltd. / 2024.2.6

First Japanese homebuilder or construction company to score a ‘Triple A’ in recognition of our leading

initiatives and disclosure

Sekisui House, Ltd. was recognized for leadership in disclosure and performance for Climate Change, Forests and Water Security, scoring a ‘Triple A’ rating in the 2023 A List from CDP, a global organization that evaluates corporations on their environmental performance. This is the first time a Japanese homebuilding or construction company has scored a Triple A.

CDP is a global non-profit charity that runs the world’s environmental disclosure system for
companies, cities, states, and regions. Founded in 2000 and working with more than 740
financial institutions with over $136 trillion in assets, CDP pioneered using capital markets
and corporate procurement to motivate companies to disclose their environmental impacts,
and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, safeguard water resources and protect forests.
Over 24,000 organizations around the world disclosed data through CDP in 2023, with more
than 23,000 companies – including listed companies worth two thirds global market
capitalization - and over 1,100 cities, states, and regions.

Fully TCFD (Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures) aligned, CDP holds the largest environmental database in the world, and CDP scores are widely used to drive investment and procurement decisions towards a zero carbon, sustainable and resilient economy.

Sekisui House aims to be a leading company in ESG management based on its global vision to “make home the happiest place in the world.” We will continue to promote these environmental measures and contribute to building a sustainable society.

We believe that our selection as an A List company in each of these areas is a recognition of our efforts in the following areas:
・Climate Change
We actively participate in international decarbonization initiatives such as SBT (Science Based Targets), disclosing information and creating a governance structure on climate change risks and opportunities in line with the TCFD framework, and participating in the Global ABC - a global alliance for decarbonization in the building and construction sector.
Toward the decarbonization of housing, 93% of detached houses built by Sekisui House in Japan in FY2022 were net zero energy houses (ZEH), and the cumulative number of orders for ZEH rental housing has now exceeded 25,000 units. We also promote ZEH condominiums for sale, with all condominiums to meet the criteria of ZEH from 2023 onward.
In the area of decarbonization of the entire supply chain, we work with suppliers to achieve an 80% supplier SBT-setting rate among major suppliers by 2030.

・Forests
In 2007, we established our own Wood Procurement Guidelines and have been promoting ‘FairWood’ procurement. Since 2001, we have also been promoting nature-positive urban environments through our “Gohon-no-ki” (5 Trees) indigenous landscaping project. As a leader in environmentally-friendly business practices, we will continue to actively disclose information on risks and opportunities in the use of natural capital in line with the guidelines of the Task Force on Nature-related Financial Disclosure (TNFD).

・ Water Security
Our group is mainly engaged in businesses that use little water, such as construction and renovation, but we take a medium- to long-term perspective on water risk and emphasize the sustainability of water resources to respond to the significant impact on our business and related supply chains. At our production sites specifically, we work to use water efficiently by, for example, using recycled water in our factories.

■Sherry Madera, CEO of CDP, said:
“Congratulations to all the companies on CDP’s A List, and those companies that started or accelerated their journey towards environmental transparency in 2023 – we saw a 24% increase of disclosures last year and that trajectory is to be applauded. It is only by laying the groundwork of disclosure that companies can show they are serious about the vital part they play in securing a net-zero, nature-positive future. Earning a place on the A List is about more than the score. It’s an indication of high quality, complete data that equips companies with a holistic view of their environmental impact, serves as a baseline for transition plans and – crucially – enables them to follow through on their ambitions. As we move deeper into the Decade of Action, and as CDP continually raises the bar for what represents environmental leadership, the work of A List companies is never complete. We look forward to seeing all companies turn their commitments into further and more meaningful and effective action.”
